Fall Carnival
On Saturday, October 10, the Dallas International School PTO hosted the first (of what we hope will be many) Fall Carnival. The event was a tremendous success bringing students and families from both DIS campuses together for an afternoon full of games, rides, and activities. Carnival go-ers were greeted in the DIS parking lot by the Enchanted Tree which was a 35' tall inflatable tree that contained a two story maze and fun house. The showcase ride was the Zip-Line which took riders, suspended by a harness, across a 75' gorge, and on to a safe landing. Students enjoyed several other rides and games at the carnival while grazing on a pizza buffet. The highlight of the afternoon was at the dunk tank where Mr. Vittoz was dunked several times in ice-cold water by the students while fully clothed in slacks and a dress shirt.
Special thanks goes out to our very own middle school and high school students that made up most of our 50+ volunteers. The carnival would not have been successful without their help.
The 2009 Fall Carnival is over, but it's time to start planning for Carnival 2010. If you are interested in joining the Carnival Committee please email Charlie Summers @ charles.summers@archon.com.
DIS Movie Night
Sponsored by the DIS-PTO, the Movie Nights at Studio Movie Grill have been a great success! We started out with Degas and the Dancer in October, Kirikou et la Sorciere in November, Mia et le Migou in January, and we have two more showings coming up April 6th and May 13th. Movies are in French with English subtitles and recommended for the whole family and friends. Stay tuned for further details about the next showing in April. As a continuation of our monthly movie nights, the March movie was held at a special venue. Over 160 DIS students, parents, faculty, staff, and grandparents met at the IMAX theater in the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science on March 6th to view the film “Journey to Mecca”. The film told the incredible story of the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta as he journeyed from Tangier to Mecca and then on into China. The film is not in mass release so the PTO was given a special opportunity to rent the film and IMAX theater for a private showing of the movie. Many parents made an afternoon out of it and visited the museums and gardens within Fair Park.
Special thanks to the Ouazzani and Salih families for arranging the rental of the movie and IMAX theater.
Mother/Daughter Tea Party
Being from Morocco, Nadia Babahaji wanted to share with the moms and daughters some of the best delicacies her country has to offer. This is a fairly simple task except that Nadia prepared tea and cooked authentic Moroccan food for a record crowd of over 160 moms and daughters. According to Nadia, “Organizing the tea party was a lot of work but at the end I was so excited about the outcome. The moms and daughters had a wonderful afternoon and everyone enjoyed it.” Everyone enjoyed it indeed! The Moroccan mint tea was very refreshing and the henna artist was very popular as well. The girls also had plenty of activities to keep them occupied while the moms had a chance to visit with each other. “Some of you might have the opportunity to go to Morocco one day”, says Nadia. “It is a beautiful country to visit and its people are very welcoming.” Special thanks to Nadia Babahaji and her entire family for helping make this year’s tea party such a successful event.
Dad’s Club Golf Tournament
The Dad’s Club hosted the annual Golf Outing for DIS parents on November 20th at the Bridges Golf Club in Gunter. The weather was ominous here in Dallas but it ended up being a great day for golf in Gunter. Golfers and non-golfers alike had a great time on the Fred Couples-designed, world class golf course with a buffet lunch afterward. On-course entertainment was provided by a foursome of mom’s that decided to “spruce-up” their golf carts and try their hand at golf. If you haven’t attended this event in the past, be sure to try it this fall. Everyone is welcome, even if you don’t have a set of clubs or have never played golf.
Special thanks to DIS dad Wayne Gillespie for arranging the tournament for us at the Bridges Golf Club.
Father/Daughter Dance
Father’s and their lovely daughters gathered in the DIS gym on February 7th for the annual Father/Daughter dance. The dad’s looked sharp but the girls stole the show like they do every year. A DJ was on hand to spin some records and the girls danced on, well into the afternoon. Even though the event fell on super bowl Sunday this year we had a great turnout and collected dozens of wine bottles for the Gala wine pull. Special thanks go to the Dad’s Club for hosting the event and to Alicia Summers for making the beautiful corsages.
